Fingerprint reader or numeric keypad? Which will be the better choice?

Exterior doors play key protective roles in a building. In addition to preventing unauthorized entry, they protect us from external environmental factors such as temperature, moisture, and noise. They are also the calling card of our home and an important decorative element of the building. From our perspective, one of the most important functions of entrance doors is protecting against uninvited guests who may attempt to break into our home. The doors should provide us with a sense of security, allowing us to feel comfortable within our own walls. But for this to happen, they must effectively offer strong protection against “uninvited guests.”

Modern solutions to enhance door security are very advanced, effective, and are gaining in popularity. One aspect of door security is controlling how they are opened and closed. More and more people are opting for fingerprint readers or numeric keypads. This is no surprise, as these solutions allow the door to be opened without the need for a key, making it much faster and more convenient, and at least as secure as opening with a key.

Fingerprint reader or numeric keypad? Which will be the better choice?

Numeric Keypad

The numeric keypad is a solution that allows us to quickly and effortlessly open the front door. All you need to do is enter a pre-set PIN, and the door opens. There is no need for a key, making entry into the home more convenient and easier for authorized individuals. It is a safe solution, and the PIN will only be known by the people we trust with the information, typically household members. One undeniable advantage of opening external doors using a numeric keypad is that you no longer need to remember to always carry your house keys with you.

How Does It Work?

The numeric keypad registers the PIN using a capacitive keyboard. After entering the PIN, the keypad compares the data with the reference codes stored in the system. Our PIN should consist of 4 to 8 digits. The longer the code and the more complex the combination of digits, the greater the assurance that a burglar will not be able to decipher it.

If we enter the wrong code three times, a 1-minute lockout occurs. The next 3 errors result in a 15-minute lockout, and every subsequent error also results in a 15-minute lockout.

Advantages of the Numeric Keypad:
  • Comfortable and simple operation,
  • Protection against tampering,
  • Compatibility with electromechanical locks,
  • High quality,
  • Quick entry into the home,
  • No need to carry a key,
  • Encoded communication.

Fingerprint Reader

The fingerprint reader is an even faster solution than the numeric keypad. Simply place your finger on it to open the door. This allows for quick entry into the home without the need to search for a key in your bag, jacket pockets, or pants. It is also a very secure solution because the door opens based on our fingerprint. Moreover, we can encode the fingerprint of each household member, and even multiple fingerprints for each of them.

How Does It Work?

The reader records our fingerprint and analyzes it through a linear sensor. Our fingerprint is compared to the stored biometric data. If there is a match, the door is opened. The proper functioning of the reader is possible for the fingerprints of the front phalanx of the finger.

Advantages of the Fingerprint Reader:
  • Fast door opening,
  • Security,
  • Simple operation,
  • No need for a key,
  • High quality.
